How Does Headlight Restoration Work?

Updated: Aug 7, 2024

Over time, headlights can become cloudy, yellowed, or scratched, which can affect their ability to provide optimal visibility on the road. Headlight restoration is the process of restoring your headlights to their original clarity and functionality.

The first step in headlight restoration is to thoroughly clean the headlights to remove any dirt, grime, or debris using isopropyl alcohol. Then, sandpaper is used to remove the layers of gunk from plastic headlight cover, which may be oxidized or scratched.

Next, a specialized restoration compound is applied to the headlights to remove any remaining oxidation and restore the clarity of the plastic. This compound may be applied by hand or with a power drill along with an attachment kit, random orbital polisher or a more expensive option - Dual Action polisher.

Finally, a sealant or clear coat is applied to protect the newly restored headlights from future damage and help maintain their clarity.

There are many different products and methods available for headlight restoration, and the best option for you will depend on the condition of your headlights and your personal preferences.
